Apple Educates With "Affordable" iPad

The March 2018 Apple event was all about education, as seen with the launch of a new 9.7-inch iPad with Apple Pencil support and a lower price tag, as well as a classroom management app dubbed Schoolwork.

education iPad The education-focused iPad is very similar to the regular iPad, even if the addition of Pencil support does merit some attention-- after all, the stylus was previously limited to the iPad Pro. Further iPad features include the A10 Fusion chip (the iPad Pro has the A10X), 32GB storage, 8MP rear-facing camera, HD FaceTime camera, compass, GPS and 10 hour battery life. For customers wanting to connect to the internet on the go an LTE version will also be available.

Foxconn Buys Belkin

Taiwan's Foxconn plans to buy into the American CE industry as it pays $866 million for Belkin International, owner of the Linksys, Phyn and Wemo brands, through subsidiary Foxconn Interconnect Technology (FIT).

Foxconn manufacturingCalifornia-based Belkin is best known as a maker of consumer networking and smart home hardware. Post-acquisition it becomes a Foxconn subsidiary, with all brands preserved. Founder and CEO Chet Pipkin remains head of the subsidiary, and Foxconn says it will increase Belkin R&D spending to help it grow further.

Three Cameras for the Huawei P20 Pro

Huawei takes to Paris to present the P20 Pro-- a flagship addition to the P20 smartphone line featuring a rear-facing camera with not one, not two, but three lenses.

Huawei P20 ProThe result, according to the camera, is an optically-stabilised telephoto camera with either 3x optical or 5x hybrid zoom. One lens is telephoto and snaps with an 8MP sensor, another features a 40MP colour sensor and the final lens provides 20MP monochrome data. Once a photo is taken the phone combines the data from the 3 sensors into a single 10MP shot using a technique Huawei calls "Light Fusion."

More Job Losses as Maplin Loses Hope

Administrator PricewaterhouseCooper announces more job cuts at Maplin-- specifically 66 more redundancies at the London and Rotherham head office-- as hopes for salvation for the retailer get even dimmer.

Maplin street“It is with real regret that we have made this decision," the administrator says. "We are grateful for the support of the employees during this difficult period and we will make every effort to help the affected staff, working with the Maplin HR team over the coming days.”

PwC had already fired 63 head office staff earlier this month, bringing the total number of redundancies to 129. Maplin currently has 79 head office staff left, and employs over 2000 workers in 217 stores, none of which have been closed as yet. That said, closures could start any time this week should the administrators fail to find a line of rescue.

IDC: Consumers Understand Smartwatches!

The global smartwatch market is on the up, IDC reports-- 2018 shipments are on track to reach 132.9 million units, a 15.1% increase over 2017, before growing to 219.4m units in 2022 with a 13.4% CAGR over the 5-year forecast period.

"Consumers are finally starting to understand and demand the utility of a smartwatch," the analyst remarks. "At present, fitness uses lead by a mile but mobile payments and messaging are starting to catch on. The addition of cellular connectivity is also starting to resonate with early adopters and looking ahead the emergence of new use cases like music streaming or additional health sensors will make cellular connectivity pivotal to the success of the smartwatch."
