Home Control, via Smart Wall

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and Disney Research have a means to transform walls into a smart home control interface-- and all it requires is conductive paint and some electronics.

Interactive wall"Walls are usually the largest surface area in a room, yet we don't make much use of them other than to separate spaces, and perhaps hold up pictures and shelves," the researchers say. "As the internet of things and ubiquitous computing become reality, it is tempting to think that walls can become active parts of our living and work environments.

Dubbed Wall++, the system involves the application of conductive paint and a sensor board to a wall. The paint is water-based and contains nickel for conductivity. First, one creates a crosshatch pattern on the wall using painter's tape. After the application of two coats of conductive paint with a roller, the tape is removed and the sensor board is connected. Finally the wall is painted again with a top coat of standard latex paint to hide the conductive paint pattern.

Essential Phone Arrives in Europe

The Essential Phone-- the smartphone developed by Android co-creator Andy Rubin-- arrives in Europe, as orders for handset are now open in the UK, Germany and France.

Essential PhoneThe smartphone first started shipping in the US back in August 2017. So far it has had something of a rocky start, as a February 2017 IDC report reveals shipments for the first 6 months total just 90000 units. The device was also hit by a number of issues prior to launch, including a 2-month delay and a lawsuit claiming the smartphone carries stolen technology.

As for what European customers are getting, the Essential Phone remains a top-tier device. It features construction in titanium and ceramic, together with a 5.5-inch edge-to-edge display clad in Gorilla Glass. Inside are a Qualcomm 835 processor, 4GB RAM, 3040mAh battery, 128GB storage and 8MP front-/13MP rear-facing cameras, while the OS of choice is Android 8.1 Oreo.

Apple Plans "Powerful" Wireless VR/AR Headset?

Apple has "big plans" for virtual reality, CNET reports-- the news site claims the iPhone maker is working on a wireless headset able to display both AR and VR content.

Vrvana headsetAccording to an unnamed "person familiar with Apple's plans," the headset will feature impressive specifications. Codenamed T288, it uses an 8K resolution display on each eye (current headsets just about reach 4K per eye) and connects to a dedicated "box" via 60Hz WiGig wireless connection. Powering the device is an upcoming chip built using a 5 nanometer process. Development is still at an early stage, and the headset is supposedly slated for a 2020 release.

Intel Gives Up on Wearables

Intel is out of the wearable device game as it shutters the New Devices Group (NDG), the division working on promising hardware such as the Vaunt smart glasses.

Intel logoThe story was first reported by The Information, who says the decision can lead in layoffs of the 200 employees forming the NDG. Further confirmation comes through an Intel statement to CNBC.

"Intel is continuously working on new technologies and experiences," a Chipzilla email to CNBC reads. "Not all of these develop into a product we choose to take to market. The Superlight project is a great example where Intel developed truly differentiated, consumer augmented reality glasses. We are going to take a disciplined approach as we keep inventing and exploring new technologies, which will sometimes require tough choices when market dynamics don't support further investment."
