Xiaomi enters the arena of high-spec gaming smartphones with the Black Shark-- a black-and-green 6-inch number with a 1080 x 2160 LCD display running on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor.

Sony Adds to 2018 OLED TVs

Sony follows on the A1 OLED TV series with a second range for 2018-- the AF8, with models available in either 55- or 65-inch sizes featuring the same technology as the A1 series, if within a different design.

Sony AF8While the A1 OLED TVs feature a "standless" design with a tilted display, the AF8 sit upright on a traditional rectangular stand. Otherwise the AF8 TVs (namely the KD-55AF8 and KD-65AF8) are identical to their A1 siblings, since they carry the same OLED panel and 4K HDR X1 Extreme processor.

Salt Lake City Gets First New Best Buy

Best Buy appears to be confident in its recovery-- so much so that, according to Star Tribune, it plans to open a first new big-box store in the US in 7 years, a 3344-square-metre outlet in Salt Lake City.

Best Buy NewSet to open in Q3 2018, the store located in a mixed-use lifestyle centre called Station Park, and is around 24km away from the nearest Best Buy.

So far Best Buy has only confirmed the opening of this one store, but it does seem it has emerged from turnaround. After all, Q4 2018 was its best quarter since Q4 2004, with same-store sales growing by 9% Y-o-Y. The retailer attributes such results to the success of the Best Buy 2020 strategy, as well as efforts to improve in-store experience, decrease employee turnover and increase training.

HP Presents Detachable Chromebook x2

HP is the second company to launch a ChromeOS-powered tablet-- the Chromebook x2 is a 12.3-inch notebook with a detachable keyboard allowing for tablet-style touchscreen use.

It runs on a 7th generation Intel Core-Y processor together with 4/8GB RAM, 32GB internal storage (expandable via microSD slot) and battery promising up to 10.5 hours of use ona  single charge. The display is a Gorilla Glass 4-clad IPS WLED number able to handle 2400x1600 resolution together with stylus support. Connectivity comes through x2 USB-C ports and headphone jack.

Ultra HD Forum Details Next-Gen 4K TV Broadcasting

4K TV broadcasting is still at the early stages, yet the Ultra HD Forum already has plans for what comes next-- including 100 and 120fps video, dynamic HDR and immersive audio formats.

UHD GuidelinesThe plans are part of the "Phase B" guidelines first presented at NAB 2018. An evolution of current Phase A technologies, Phase B covers dynamic metadata, next generation audio (NGA) and high frame rate (HFR). As such, one can expect the use of video formats such as Dolby Vision and SL-HDR, as well as Dolby AC-4 and MPEG-H audio.
