High-end AV gear maker Oppo Digital announces an exit from CE after 14 in the business, citing a lack of resources as the main reason it will no longer develop and release no products.

Optoma Intros UHD51 4K DLP Projector

Optoma announces a lower-cost 4K projector option-- the UHD51, a single chip DLP projector featuring Texas Instruments XPR technology aimed for use as a UHD home theatre display.

Optoma UHD51The UHD51 is interesting since it is the first in the Optoma 4K range to support full 3D, something absent from all 4K TVs in the market. It is also HDR compatible, and features connectivity through x2 HDMIs (one 4K HDCP 2.2 capable) and a USB power port for streaming from an HDMI dongle.

Bloomberg: Apple to Make Processors for Future Macs

Apple plans to drop Intel chips from Macs starting from around 2020, Bloomberg reports-- with the replacement being Apple-developed processors, part of an initiative dubbed "Kalamata."

Apple IntelAccording to anonymous "people familiar with the plans," Kalamata is a strategy to make all Apple devices (such as Macs, iPhones and iPads) work more similarly and seamlessly together, leading to a more tightly integrated Apple ecosystem. The initiative is reportedly already approved, and probably involves a "multi-step transition."

"Everyday Premium Computing" With the Samsung Notebook 3, 5

Samsung launches a pair of notebooks aimed at customers wanting to indulge in "everyday premium computing-- the Notebook 3 and Notebook 5, both running on a choice of Intel and Nvidia hardware.

Samsung Notebook 5The Notebook 3 comes in either 14- or 15-inch sizes in a choice of four colours (misty gray, night charcoal, deep peach and pure white), while the Notebook 5 is a 15.6-inch device complete with a metal body in a "light titan" colour. Customers can configure the notebooks with a choice of 8th Generation Intel KBL-RU quad-core or 7th Generation Intel KBL U processors, although Samsung has to actually specify the processors in question.

Smart Assistants: Cause of Consumer Crisis?

According to a SmarterHQ survey there is a neat split between the two big smart assistants-- 44.4% of respondents own an Amazon Alexa device, while 43.7% own a Google Home product. The rest (11.9%) use the Apple HomePod.

Alexa HomeThe survey covers the omnichannel shopping habits of 1000 adults in the US. It shows consumers are increasingly distracted as they hop from channel to channel, and smart assistants only add to the issue. As a result, it is increasingly difficult to retain customer loyalty, even as brick-and-mortar stores remain the most popular place to shop.

“Consumers view all the channels they shop on-- online, in-store, through social media, or via assistant home devices-- as a single point-of-contact with a brand, yet many retailers still treat these channels as disparate systems that aren’t connected,” SmarterHQ says. “This puts pressure on marketers to make the brand experience a consistent one, no matter the channel. Without a marketing strategy that includes customer identity resolution, brands risk losing buyers to the more targeted and personalised campaigns of their competitors.”
