The Japanese Pioneer website hosts a mysterious image teasing what is possibly an upcoming 4K UHD Blu-ray player-- at least judging from the text and url of the website in question.

Both are shrouded with a blue cloth, and on top is the Japanese kanji "gyouten," meaning "dawn"-- the suggestion of a new dawn for Pioneer players?  Below the rectangles is Japanese text reading "it's been 4 years since the impact. Sharp Brings 8K TV to Europe

Customers demanding a TV with the most pixels now get a Sharp option-- the Aquos LC-70X500E is a 70-inch UHD TV offering 7680 x 4320 resolution. Or, in other words, an 8K TV.

Sharp 8K TVFirst launched at IFA 2017 and already available in Japan and China, the LC-70X500E pushes no less than 33 million pixels, for a density of 125 ppi. It also offers wide colour technology covering 79% of the Rec.2020 colour gamut, and supports HDR through HLG and HDR10. The display uses full array LED backlighting technology with 216 LED zones of dynamic local dimming, and a 2.1 audio subsystem is included.

Motorola Returns With G6 Smartphones

Lenovo-owned Motorola is back at the mid-tier smartphone game with the G6, G6 Play and G6 Plus-- a smartphone trio offering at least some flagship-tier features, only with a more affordable pricetag.

Moto G6The G6 smartphones are fairly similar Android 8.0 devices. The G6 and G6 Plus are both 5.7-inch devices with 18:9 aspect ratio displays and thin bezels, although the G6 has the more premium construction with a Gorilla Glass back. The Play, on the other hand, has polymer glass. The G6 also features better specs, with a Snapdragon 450 processor, 3/4GB RAM, 32/64GB storage (expendable via microSD), 8MP front-facing camera, 12MP rear-facing camera with f/1.7lens, USB-C connectivity and fingerprint sensor.

IDC: Tougher 2017 for EMEA Smartphones

The 2017 smartphone market sees a second drop in shipments, IDC reports-- volumes total 361 million units, down from 374m in 2016. Revenues are also down, from €101 billion in 2016 to €96bn in 2017.

SmartphonesThe decline in smartphones comes not only from the more mature W. and C. European regions, but also emerging segments of EMEA. One example is Africa, to the detriment of entry-level smartphone players such as Alcatel and Lenovo. On the other hand, feature phones are no longer in "rapid decline," as 2017 shipments are up by 8.7% to 206m. Such growth primarily comes from Africa, but IDC points out shipments of such devices are also "falling more slowly than before" in European territories.

The Casio Wear OS smartwatch selection gets another outdoors-y model-- the Pro Trek Smart Outdoor Watch (aka the WSD-F20A), a device aimed at customers with a love for hiking and trekking.
