Farewell, Steam Link

Valve announces the Steam Link is no more, having sold out of the device in Europe and "almost" sold out in the US-- and it appears the company has no plans to make more.

SteamlinkAnnounced back in March 2015, the Steam Link is essentially a small HDMI box allowing users to stream games from the Steam Library (as well as non-Steam games added to the library) on PC to any TV in the home. It offers 1080p resolution streams at 60fps through either ethernet or 802.11ac wifi, and includes x3 USB ports, Bluetooth 4.0 and support for a number of wireless joypads, such as the Steam Controller and Xbox One or 360 controllers.

Satechi Adds USB-C Wireless Charger

Satechi announces a wireless charger featuring USB-C connectivity-- the Aluminum Type-C PD and QC Wireless Charger, a Qi-certified number complete with 10W wireless quick charging for compatible devices from Apple and Samsung.

Satechi aluminium chargerThe charger has an aluminium case with a rubberised top and a raised cross to make finding the charging coil easy. Over-temperature protection means the charger will not burn out devices, while "foreign object detection" promises to protect the charger from potentially damaging metal objects. An LED light on the front lets one know when charging is complete.

A Smaller Raspberry Pi With the Model A+

The Raspberry Pi Foundation announces what is essentially a smaller and lower-cost version of the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ micro-PC-- the Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+, a Raspberry Pi on a smaller printed circuit board and some cut features.

Raspberry Model B+The Model A+ runs on the same quad-core 1.4GHz Broadcom processor as the Model B+, and also features Bluetooth 4.2 and 2.4/5GHz wifi. However it lacks an ethernet port, RAM is down from 1GB to 512MB and it has just x1 USB 2.0 port instead of x4. That said, the Model A+ still promises improved thermal management, and the board is certified as a radio module under FCC rules.

Hover Selfie Drone Gets Sequel

Zero Zero Robotics announces a sequel to the 2016 Hover Camera Passport drone-- the Hover 2, a more powerful take on the AI-powered selfie-taking drone, complete with a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and an "Optical Radar" feature.

Hover 2The Hover 2 features a foldable body similar to the first version, if with encasing users can replace with a lighter protector allowing for longer flight time and control range. The Optical Radar feature consists of a swiveling stereo sensor adding 360-degree depth perception and obstacle avoidance, allowing the onboard camera to focus on the subject.

Canalys: Amazon Leads Smart Speakers in Q3 2018

Global smart speaker shipments total 19.7 million units in Q3 2018, Canalys reports-- a 137% Y-o-Y increase over Q3 2017 shipments of 8.3m, and well in line with the Canalys forecast of 75m for the whole of 2018.

Following the initial wave of smart speaker adoption, vendors are rapidly changing marketing strategies to target different user groups. For instance, college and university students are key music streaming service consumers, making easy targets for Amazon and Google through back-to-school deals. Vendors are also building on the theme of home automation and IoT by positioning smart speakers as central hubs, but they still face a key issue in lowering the technical barriers to adoption.
