Gartner: Wearables Sales Up 26% in 2019

PDFPrintE-mail

According to Gartner, global wearable device shipments are set to reach 225 million in 2019-- a 25.8% increase over 2018. End user spending is to reach $42 billion, with $16.2bn going on smartwatches.

“At the moment, the smartwatch market is bolstered by the relatively stable and higher average selling price (ASP) of the Apple Watch,” the analyst says. “But the overall ASP of smartwatches is expected to slowly decline from $221.99 in 2018 to $210 in 2022, due to lower-priced competitors and as higher volumes lead to reductions in manufacturing and component costs, while strong brands like Apple and traditional watch brands try to keep pricing stable.”

Gartner wearables

Smartwatch shipments are forecast to total 74m in 2019, making smartwatches the top wearable device segment. However, Gartner predicts ear-worn devices ("hearables") will reach the top by 2022, with shipments reaching 158m units. In comparison, 2022 smartwatch shipments are forecast to total 115m. Current hearables such as the Apple AirPods, Samsung IconX and Plantronics BlackBeat FIT, provide little more beyond communication and entertainment, but the future should see the capabilities of such devices accomodate virtual assistants to allow for a multitude of tasks, such as queries and hands-free directions.
