Bernard Darty left the electronics retail company with his family name in 1993, after Kingfisher took over. But his legacy as Darty's CEO in the retail industry lived on. Even after the 2016 acquisition by Fnac.
Now the man himself (at age 84) is gone, passed away during his usual winter retreat to Florida. And still his Darty legacy will be with us.
Today, the company employs 26,000 people, including 19,000 in its home country. France is the location of 510 Fnac Darty stores and brings in 72 % of the group's turnover. Abroad, the merger company has 218 outlets.
In 1957, the Darty family — the father and his three sons, Natan, Marcel and Bernard — managed a small store of textiles. The Darty brothers started to sell stock on the pavement to attract customers. In a few days, the stock was sold.
They bought out a neighboring retail shop to expand, a radio TV store. The rest is now history.
