V-Moda Puts DAC/AMP in SpeakEasy Lightning Cable

The V-Moda SpeakEasy is a Lightning to 3.5mm cable featuring a built-in 24-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC), a headphone amp with 31mW power and a 3-button remote with microphone for the control of music, calls and Siri.

Speakeasy CableThe cable is 1.35m long and weighs 17.5g, and features MFi certification and a 114dB signal-to-noise ratio. V-Moda says it does not use more energy than an average 3.5mm audio cable, and it should be compatible with "most brands" of headphones with detachable 3.5mm ports, including models from Beats, Philips, Hyper X and Audio Technica, among others.

Huawei Punches Hole for Nova 4 Selfie Camera

Huawei has an unusual, if perhaps effective, solution for placing a front-facing camera in a bezel-free smartphone display-- a "hole punch" cutout in the upper left corner of the display, as seen in the upcoming Nova 4 handset.

Huawei Nova 4First spotted during a livestream for the 18th birthday of Chinese singer Jackson Yee, the smartphone was further teased in a post on the Weibo social media. Either way the result is a smartphone without a notch or bezels, even if the permanent black dot on the display might prove distracting to at least some users.

Arlo announces a 4K UHD version of its wireless security camera system-- the Ultra, a security camera complete with HDR, advanced image processing and even a built-in spotlight for colour night vision.

Arlo UltraAccording to the company the 4K sensor inside the Ultra provides additional detail and clarity, allowing users to further zoom into videos to check license plates, clothing and other telling details. The panoramic 180-degree field of view is the widest in an Arlo camera yet, and allows for more flexibility when placing the camera.

Japan Starts 8K TV Broadcast

Move over, 4K TV-- 8K TV broadcasts officially start in Japan, as 1 December 2018 sees NHK start first public broadcasts of both 4K and 8K channels (complete with 22.2-channel audio!) via satellite.

NHK 8K BroadcastThe broadcasts kick off after 2 years of testing. The technology, called "Super Hi-Vision" by NHK, has been in development since 1995, and promises 16 times the resolution of HDTV. As for the actual broadcast the BS8K channel features 12 hours of daily programming, including an information digest highlighting the future of the channel, a live broadcast from Italy and even an 8K version of the seminal 2001: A Space Odyssey.
