PDFPrintE-mail

Customers wanting a helping hand with their golf game get Garmin wearable-- the Approach X10, a "simple and intuitive" golf-tracking band aimed at beginners to the game Mark Twain allegedly described as a good walk ruined.

Garmin Approach X10The Approach X10 is a more affordable version of the previous Approach X40. It offers data from over 41000 courses across the world, and allows users to check distances to the front, back and middle of the green, as well as hazards such as bunkers and water, via 1-inch touchscreen. The battery promises up to 12 hours of use in GPS mode on a single charge.

On the stats side, the wearable keeps track of greens in regulation, putts and fairways, and measures shot distance. A Green View display provides the layout of the green, with the touchscreen allowing one to easily position the pin on the specific location for accurate shot selection.

The Dual-Sensor SteelSeries Rival 600

PDFPrintE-mail

CES 2018 sees the launch of a new mouse from gaming peripheral maker SteelSeries-- the Rival 600, the first from the company to feature dual optical sensors to track movement even when the mouse is in the air.

SteelSeries Rival 600The mouse uses TrueMove3+, a system combining a TrueMove3 primary sensor and a second PixArt optical sensor to track lift-off distance. SteelSeries claims the dual sensors eliminate jitter and cursor disparity on lift-off movements, while the lift-off distance is the lowest in the market.

“We took a massive leap forward in sensor innovation with Pixart with the TrueMove3 sensor in the Rival 310 and Sensei 310," the company says. "Now we’re taking that innovation even further by combining the true 1-to-1 tracking of the TrueMove3 with a second optical sensor for precision. It’s the only dual optical sensor system in the world that can offer this level of precision and accuracy of movement.”

Nintendo Adds Papercraft to Switch

PDFPrintE-mail

Nintendo remains on a quirky streak as it announces Labo-- a range of "experiences designed to inspire creative minds and playful hearts alike" customers build out of cardboard.

Nintendo LaboAs seen in the announcement video, Labo sets consists of sheets of perforated cardboard. Customers pop out the different shapes and fold them according to on-screen instructions to create objects such as a piano, fishing rod, bike or even a robot suit. Nintendo calls these results "Toy-Cons," and they spring to life when the users slot the Switch controllers or tablet into place.

Thus the cardboard piano becomes a playable instrument, with the IR sensor in the right Joy-Con detecting which key is being pressed before the console plays it through the built-in speakers. Other Toy-Cons use the combination of controller and console to create drivable motorbikes, fishing games and what looks like an interactive house.

Judging from a Statista chart smart speakers such as the Amazon Echo are becoming increasingly popular, at least in the US-- 39 million Americans own such a device, and more people use them to access news, information and music.

Alexa statista

The chart is based on a November 2017 survey of 806 smart speaker owners conducted by NPR and Edison Research. It shows around 66% of smart speakers owners do not want to go back to life without the "little helper," while 39% are spending less time using the radio. This is perhaps not surprising, since listening to music (in many cases online radio) is one of the most commonly used features of the devices.
