Huawei Presents MateBook X Pro at MWC

Huawei uses Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 to launch a laptop-- the MateBook X Pro, a super-slim offering featuring thin bezels with what the company claims is a 91% screen-to-body ratio.

Matebook x proThe MateBook X Pro features a 13.9-inch 3000 x 2000 resolution touchscreen with a Surface-style 3:2 aspect ratio. It is covered in anti-fingerprint coated Gorilla Glass with 260ppi, 100% sRGB gamut, 450 nits maximum brightness and 1500:1 contrast ratio. The aforementioned thin bezels do not allow for a webcam, meaning the camera is hidden between the keyboard's F6 and F7 function keys. It pops up at when pressed, and promises visual privacy when not in use.

Plenty of Lenovo Notebooks at MWC 2018

MWC 2018 is all about notebooks for Lenovo, as the company presents no less than 6 examples of the form at Barcelona-- 3 powered by Windows 10, and 3 "E-class" Chromebooks.

Lenovo FlexThe Windows 10 Lenovo offerings come in Flex and Yoga flavours. All feature hinges supporting Laptop, Tent, Stand and Tablet modes (making them convertible devices), carry Intel Core i7 processors and support the Lenovo Active Pen stylus. The Flex 14 is a 14-inch number with GeForce MX130 graphics, up to 16GB DDR4 RAM, 512GB SSD storage and a battery promising up to 10 hours of use on a single charge.

Deutsche Telekom and Zeiss Team Up in Smart Glasses

Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018 sees Deutsche Telekom and Zeiss present a team up-- Tooz Technologies, a joint venture focusing on smart glasses combining Zeiss technology and 5G connectivity.

Tooz smartglassesAs seen at the show, the Tooz smart glasses feature a display inside the right arm of the frame. It projects onto a mirror before reflecting on a lens cut in the middle of the right eyepiece. The glasses support a combination of touch, gesture and button controls, with cameras (or without), augmented reality, 5G, no cellular connectivity, wifi or Bluetooth, allowing partners to build a custom smart glasses solution.

"The diverse and economically promising development projects have confirmed for us that there will be a market for Smart Glasses as well as for business and end consumers," Deutsche Telekom says. "These scenarios range from logistics and maintenance to fitness and health applications."

HMD Brings Nokia Matrix Phone Back

Nearly 20 years ago, the Wachowski siblings wowed the world with The Matrix, the seminal science fiction film starring Keanu Reeves and, in a small yet critical role, the Nokia 8110. And now it's back at MWC 2018, as HMD announces a 4G update of the "banana" phone.

Nokia 8110Released back in 1996, the 8110 was, of course, most famous for the spring-loaded slider-- it is the chief reason it was Neo's phone of choice, after all (that, and Nokia was the biggest phone maker at the time). The 2018 update retains the mechanism, as well as the bright yellow colour that garnered it the "banana" nickname. The black colour seen in The Matrix remains an option, though.

Startup Made in Mind claims to have a slim charging solution for all devices, including laptops-- the Mu One, a USB-C charger able to support USB Power Delivery with maximum voltage reaching 20V.

Mu oneThe Mu one can be used with all devices, including USB-C laptops such as the latest Apple MacBooks. It is the brainchild of Min-Kyu Choi, the creator of a foldable USB-enabled UK plug, and comes with interchangeable plugs, a fully-foldable UK plug, a hinged European plug and a low-profile US plug. The result is a charger just 14mm thick when folded and weighing 80g.
