LG Helps Customers With Self-Driving Shopping Carts

According to LG, the future of retail is robotic-- the S. Korean company plans to put robots to work at the largest supermarket chain in the country, E-Mart, in the shape of self-driving shopping carts.

LG smart shopping cartDeveloped by the LG lab responsible for a number of robots released under the CLOi brand, the shopping cart robots promise to "free visitors from the hassle of pushing heavy carts by themselves." The company says the robots will follow shoppers as they walk through the aisles, automatically avoiding obstacles along the way.

IDC: Challenging Q3 for Smartphones

Global smartphone shipments total 355.2 million in Q3 2018-- a -6% Y-o-Y drop, making a 4th consecutive quarter of Y-o-Y declines for the global smartphone market, bringing about questions involving the future of the market.

The analyst points out a major factors for the quarter. The first involves Samsung, largest smartphone vendor in terms of market share, accounting for 20.3% of Q3 2018 shipments even as sees a -13.4% Y-o-Y drop. Samsung shipments total 72.2m units, and the company faces challenges from all directions. Huawei is getting increasingly closer to the top as it holds on the 2nd position in the vendor rankings Meanwhile Chinese brands such as Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo prove are finding success in growing markets where Samsung held top position for many years.

Facebook Reshuffles Oculus

Facebook plans to stick with virtual reality for the long haul-- according to TechCrunch, the social network is reogranising Oculus to a "functional structure focused around technology areas of expertise."

Oculus GoSuch a reshuffle, the report states, allows Oculus to work as a whole on the long term, instead being split into groups working on separate gadgets. Facebook does confirm the "internal changes" to TechCrunch, stating the company's leadership remains as is with CTO John Carmack and co-founder/Head of PC VR Nate Mitchell reporting to Facebook VP of AR/VR Andrew "Boz" Bosworth.

However Oculus did see a recent change in leadership-- co-founder and former CEO Brendan Iribe left the the company earlier last month. Allegedly the reason behind the departure is the cancellation of the "Rift 2," a next-generation "complete redesign" of the original PC-powered headset. According to TechCrunch, Iribe has "fundamentally different views on the future of Oculus" from Facebook, and is not interested in a "race to the bottom" in terms of performance.

Apple Updates iPad Pro for 2018

Apple confirms months of rumours as it presents an iPad Pro redesign-- one offering an "all-screen" design bereft of Home button, Face ID facial recognition, a USB-C port and, of course, more powerful internals.

iPad Pro 2018The 2018 iPad Pro comes in 2 sizes, 11- and 12.9-inch, with thinner bezels leading to smaller tablets. The 11-inch model actually measures as much as the previous 10.5-inch model, while the 12.9-inch model is smaller than the screen size suggests. Other than size both devices are essentially identical, with the same curvy unibody holding the A12X Bionic, a processor described by Apple as "the smartest and most powerful chip in a tablet."
