IFA 2018 Launch for Samsung 8K TV

Samsung is all set for the next big thing in TV as it unveils the Q900R at IFA 2018-- a QLED 8K TV complete with "8K AI upscaling" the company says will be hitting stores as early as the end of September 2018.

Samsung 8K TVAvailable in 65-, 75-, 82- and 85-inch sizes, the Q900R offers a range of 8K-ready enhancements, all with names such as Real 8K Resolution, Q HDR 8K and Quantum Processor 8K. It features 7680 x 4320 resolution, four times of a 4K panel, with HDR 10+ technology optimised for such resolution and peak brightness reaching 4000 nits.

Nubia Puts Smartphone on the Wrists

While smartwatches appear to be moving away from being mere wrist-worn smartphones, ZTE spinoff Nubia goes in the opposite direction with the Nubia-a, a flexible screen device the company describes as a "wearable smartphone."

Nubia-aThe Nubia-a looks like one of those delightful oddities the darker corners of IFA tend to house, even if it is the brainchild of a proven smartphone maker. Directly inspired by science fiction movie props, it claims to put all smartphone functions on the wrist, thanks to a proprietary Flex display wrapped halfway around a chunky wristband.

Libratone Updates Zipp Speakers at IFA

IFA 2018 hosts the launch of an update of the Libratone Zipp wireless speakers-- the Zipp 2 and Zipp Mini 2, offering longer 12 hours of battery life and voice control via support for the Amazon Alexa assistant.

Libratone Zipp 2The Zipp 2 and Zipp Mini 2 feature the same cylindrical form factor as the first versions, including the colourful textured tops users can unzip and swap (explaining the name). The tops come complete with a leather loop, allowing for easy hanging from an umbrella or tree branch, while the round design provides 360-degree audio.

The Google Assistant-Equipped Citation 500

Harman Kardon is the next company to present a Google Assistant-powered smart speaker at IFA 2018-- the Citation 500, a high-end audio offering featuring 200W stereo speakers and 24-bit/96kHz streaming support.

Harman Kardon Citation 500The Citation 500 comes in a fabric-covered design reminiscent of the Google Home speaker line. The top carries an LCD touchpanel providing playback controls, although of course one can control the speaker via voice. In addition, customers can pair the Citation 500 with smartphones to add another audio source.

Gartner: Huawei Beats Apple on Smartphone Front

Gartner reports a smartphone market first-- Huawei beats Apple in terms of sales on Q2 2018, making it to 2nd place by selling 49.8 million handsets to end users in the quarter.

"Huawei’s smartphone sales grew 38.6% Y-o-Y in Q2 2018. Huawei continues to bring innovative features into its smartphones and expand its smartphone portfolio to cover larger consumer segments," the analyst says. "Its investment into channels, brand building and positioning of the Honor devices helped drive sales. Huawei is shipping its Honor smartphones into 70 markets worldwide and is emerging as Huawei’s key growth driver."
