FCA Fines Carphone Warehouse £29 Million

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the UK financial regulator, fines Carphone Warehouse to the tune of £29 million following an investigation into the "Geek Squad" mobile phone insurance and technical support offering.

Carphone Warehouse sellingAccording to the FCA, the retailer sales consultants were not adequately trained to give suitable advice to customers buying Geek Squad. Instead, salespeople were trained in "spin selling," or simply recommending Geek Squad to customers even if they had already had cover, such as through home insurance or bank accounts. The sales lead to a high early cancellation rates, something the FCA says is an indicator of a risk of mis-selling Carphone Warehouse failed to consider.

Apple Refreshes iPad Air, mini

Apple makes the surprise announcement of a pair of tablet refreshes-- the 2019 iPad Air and Mini models feature the A12 Bionic chip, as well as stylus input through Pencil support.

iPad updateThe iPad Air gets an increase in size to 10.5-inch, as well as the A12 Bionic chip promising a 70% performance boost and twice the graphics capability compared to the previous model. Connectivity comes through a Lightning connector (as opposed to a USB-C port), while Touch ID remains the security system of choice. The update also brings support for the (first generation) Pencil and the Smart Keyboard, allowing one to use the tablet for light productivity purposes.

IDC: Slow Personal Computing Device Decline Continues Apace

According to IDC, global shipments of personal computing devices (PCD)-- comprising traditional PCs and tablets-- are to decline by -3.3% in 2019, before the market shrinks to 372.6 million units in 2023 with a CAGR of -1.2%.

Detachables are set to grow "modestly" over the 5-year forecast period, with a CAGR of 4.6%. IDC says the product category should see a stronger impact in the commercial segment, as vendors increasingly focus on the enterprise and education markets for sales. Education-centric Chrome-based devices are to find some traction as detachable Chrome tablets enter the scene.

On the other hand slate tablets are to continue declining with a CAGR of -4.4%. The market is becoming increasingly concentrated around the holiday quarters, and competition from key players has lead to more brands either reducing their presence or exiting the market altogether.

A Wireless Keyboard from Corsair

Corsair proposes a means for using a PC while seated on the couch-- the K83 Wireless, a laptop-style 76-key keyboard complete with wireless connectivity, a joystick, two shoulder buttons and a trackpad with Windows 10 gesture support.

Corsair K83The K83 Wireless features ultra-low-profile scissor key switches, making it slim and light. Of course, the joystick is the most unusual addition, but should be useful for game control, especially when combined with the two shoulder buttons. Customers can also use the joystick as a mouse replacement, and the WASD keys are specially painted.

LG Rolls Out 2019 TVs

LG announces the roll out of the 2019 premium TV lineup, with OLED and NanoCell LCD TVs in sizes up to 86-inch promising "upgraded AI picture and sound quality" thanks to the addition of the 2nd generation Alpha 9 processor.

LG 2019 OLED TVThe mid-year will also see the TVs receive a firmware upgrade adding Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support, allowing easy connectivity with iDevices, as well as an update adding Alexa support to complement the currently included Google Assistant. As such, the company claims it is only TV maker to offer support for both leading AI platforms without need for additional hardware.
