Rapid Growth for DAB Radios

According to GfK, H1 2017 sees "rapid" growth in DAB+ receiver sales across Europe, in good part driven by the Norwegian switchover from FM to DAB+, as well as the development of digital radio markets across the continent.

DAB radioThe research covers Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, The Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland. It shows sales ae up by 30% Y-o-Y for H2 2017, reaching 1.1 million audio home systems, tuners, receivers, clock radios, portable radios, radio recorders and aftermarket car radios.

As mentioned earlier, Norway was a key sales drivers-- the country sees H1 2017 sales grow by 192% Y-o-Y. Digital Radio Norway says overall sales total 4.1m, and 78% of Norwegian households own one or more DAB+ sets.

Google announces the sweet-themed name, as well as further details, of the next version of the Android operating system-- Oreo, out now in developer preview/public beta form.

Android OreoAlso known as Android O, the update consists mainly of consumer-facing tweaks. These include picture-in-picture multitasking, notification "dots" on frequently used apps, improved battery management, instant app support, an autofill tool for quick and secure password and personal information entry, and, perhaps most importantly, 60 redesigns of the blob-faced emoji.

The "Bothie" Taking Nokia 8

HMD Global hopes to introduce a new word with the launch of the Nokia 8, its first Nokia-branded Android flagship-- "bothie," or a photo taken by both front and rear cameras, simultaneously.

Nokia 8Attempts at terminology aside, the Nokia 8 is the Finnish company's take on the likes of Apple and Samsung. It is a 5.3-inch device with an aluminium unibody, inside of which are a 2560 x 1440 resolution LCD display, Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage (expandable to 256GB via microSD card) and a 3090mAh battery. The software of choice is stock Android 7 (aka Nougat).

IDC: W. European Tablet Market "Almost" Returns to Growth

According to IDC the contraction of the W. European tablet market felt on Q2 2017 is of "just" -0.5% Y-o-Y as shipments reach 70 million units, an "almost complete recovery of the market in the region."

Driving such recovery are Apple tablets and improvement in the macroeconomic situation of several countries. In general, detachable see 1% Y-o-Y growth, while regular slate tablets show "resilience" with a decrease of just -1% Y-o-Y. Interestingly, the commercial segment shows positive 2.8% Y-o-Y growth, mainly driven by Apple and Android-based detachables (whose growth is 29.3% and 34.9% Y-o-Y respectively).

"Detachables are showing particularly strong growth within the corporate business, facilitated by the introduction of more commercially oriented models," the analyst remarks. "These models are geared toward operating primarily as a portable PC with the secondary benefit of a tablet, helping to compete against the growing commercial trend toward the adoption of convertibles."
