The Rugged Romeo Power Saber Battery

Recently founded battery maker Romeo Power announces a first product-- the Saber, a rugged battery pack offering 23000mAh (or 86 watt-hours) of power, allowing it to charge a laptop twice.

Saber batteryFormed by former Tesla, SpaceX, Amazon and Faraday Future engineers, Romeo Power says it wanted to create a "personal power pack designed to recharge any digital device at full speed," be it smartphones, laptops or drones. The Saber is around the size of a water bottle, weighs 1kg and offers x1 USB-C, x2 USB-A (one 2.1A/10.5W, the other 1A/5W) and a variable AC outlet with a universal port.

“Saber is like having a wall socket in your pocket,” the company adds. “We created Saber to be the most advanced power pack available that gets you out the door faster than anyone else, and with a lifeproof design so consumers can have power wherever life takes them.”

Microsoft cements its hardware ambitions with the announcement of the Surface Book 2-- a sequel to the 2015 notebook featuring 8th generation Intel processors and a 15-inch display option.

Surface Book 2The Surface Book 2 looks very similar to the original (not to mention the 2016 update), even if Microsoft insists just about every detail has been tweaked. As the most powerful piece of hardware from the Windows maker yet, it carries 8th gen quad-core Intel Core processors, with the Core i7 models adding GeForce 10-series series graphics.

An Analogue Super Nt for Playing SNES Carts

Nintendo might already offer an official miniature Super Nintendo console, but more serious retro gaming fans get a second option from Analogue-- the Super Nt, a recreation able to play game cartridges of old.

Super NtThe Super Nt promises to be superior to the SNES Mini, since it does not use emulation to play retro games. Instead it uses a complete FPGA (field-programmable gate array) promising to "preserve videogame history, with the respect it deserves" while pushing 1080p 60Hz visuals compatible with modern HDTVs. In addition fans also get features such as scanlines and aspect ratio preservation, as well as 48kHz 16-bit stereo audio.

Qualcomm Claims 5G Data Connection

Qualcomm manages a first 5G data connection on a 5G modem chipset for mobile devices-- specifically the Snapdragon X50, a mobile device modem first announced last year.

Qualcomm 5g announceThe test took place at the Qualcomm San Diego laboratories, and involved data connections via the 28GHz millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum) using several 100MHz 5G carriers. The modem managed gigabit speeds, but should be capable of full 5Gbps speeds once 5G deployments are complete.

“Achieving the world’s first announced 5G data connection with the Snapdragon X50 5G modem chipset on 28GHz mmWave spectrum is truly a testament to Qualcomm Technologies’ leadership in 5G and extensive expertise in mobile connectivity,” the company says. "This major milestone and our 5G smartphone reference design showcase how Qualcomm Technologies is driving 5G NR in mobile devices to enhance mobile broadband experiences for consumers around the world.”
