Sony Claims Fastest USB Hub

Sony announces what it describes as "the world’s fastest UHS-II SD and microSD card reader"-- the MRW-S3, an addition to the TOUGH SF-M series of SD card readers able to double as a handy USB hub.

Sony USB HubAimed primarily at photographers, videographers and creators, the MRW-S3 handles both high-resolution RAW image files and 4K video, as well as just about any other kind of file type. It supports USB 3.1 Gen 2, allowing for data transfers of up to 1000MB/s, allowing users to connect high-speed external SSDs, and can receiver up to 100W USB Power Deliver (USB PD) for stable connections with devices.

An HDMI output with 4K 30fps capabilities allows the connection of external monitors without need for external adapters or occupying limited PC ports. The actual hub promises to be tough, with a durable aluminium body and a wave surface to prevent scratches. It weighs just 95g and includes a detachable USB-C to USB-C cable for connecting to host PCs. The cable includes an embedded eMarker, allowing connection to USB 3.1 Gen 2 devices or a USB PD AC adapter.

Motorola DIY Repair Program Reaches Europe

Motorola follows on the US launch of a DIY smartphone repair program with the announcement of European availability, providing customers with a selection of replacement packs through a partnership with iFixit.

iFixit motorolaAvailable across all 28 EU countries (plus Norway and Switzerland), the program offers everything a DIY fix requires, including "high-quality" OEM parts, Fix Kits containing the necessary tools and step-by-step repair guides in French, German and English courtesy of iFixit. Such a service, Motorola says, not only boosts customer satisfaction but also helps create a more circular economy, as opposed to the current throwaway economy.

IDC: Google Leads Q1 European Smart Home Market

The European smart home market sees shipments reach 21.3 million units in Q1 2019, IDC reports-- a 23.9% Y-o-Y increase, with W. Europe responsible for 88.3% of the region share, even as CEE sees the biggest increase (32.2% Y-o-Y).

The market is forecast to reach 107.8m in 2019, growing 21% from 2018. It is set to reach 183.9m in 2023, with video entertainment and smart speakers as the 2 main categories.

IDC Smarthome market

Smart speakers are up by 58.1% Y-o-Y to 3.35m units shipped, making 15.8% of the market and the 2nd largest product category. It is also the best quarter yet for the category, according to IDC. Google Home devices are responsible for 45.1% of smart speakers shipped, beating the 41.8% of Amazon Echo devices. However the analyst still expects Alexa to remain the top voice assistant in Europe in 2019, even if the Google AI Platform should beat it by 2022.

A 4G LTE Doki Smartwatch for Kids

Doki presents a smartwatch for parents wanting to remain connected to their kids-- the DokiPal, a 4G LTE-enabled wearable complete with video calling, location tracking and even a voice assistant.

DokipalBilled as a successor to the company's previous child-focused smartwatches such as the DokiWatch, the DokiPal features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 2100 chipset and a large 8000mAh battery inside a tough plastic casing. A built-in SIM allows 4G LTE connectivity in 50 countries via partnership with Telefónica, and customers can simply slot in an own SIM for compatibility with networks in 150 countries.

The DokiPal also includes a 1.4-inch touchscreen covered in Gorilla Glass, and is IP68 water resistant. Doki says the battery is good for up to 48 hours of normal use or 72 hours in standby mode. A front-facing camera allows for video calling, while a combination of GPS, LBS and wifi triangulation provides parents with location tracking.
