IDC: European Smart Home Market Reaches 22m in Q2

The European smart home market reaches 22 million units in Q2 2019, IDC reports-- a 17.8% Y-o-Y increase with CEE showing the biggest growth (43.5% Y-o-Y) even as W. Europe holds the lion's share of the market (86.47%).

The analyst expects such growth to continue in the near future, with shipments rising from 107.8m in 2019 to 185.5m in 2023 at a CAGR of 14.5%. Video entertainment and smart speakers are to make 65% of the 2023 shipment total.

Smart speaker shipments total 4.1m units on the Quarter, a 33.2% Y-o-Y increase. Amazon takes back the lead in the quarter thanks to the release of the Echo Show 5, following Google taking first place for the first time in Q1 2019. Smart speakers record the biggest annual growth, with Google and Amazon leading in CEE, since consumers consider local language support essential when buying such a device.

Garmin Brings Star Wars to the Wrist

Sound United Calls Off Onkyo Home Audio Purchase

Back in May 2019 Sound United announced the acquisition of the Onkyo consumer audio division. Now the deal appears to be off the table, as Forbes reports the Onkyo board of directors has resolved to terminate the transfer.

The deal would have had Onkyo transfer its home AV business-- owner of the Onkyo, Pioneer, Pioneer Elite and Integra brands-- to the Sound United, the parent company of Denon, Polk Audio and Marantz, among others, for an undisclosed sum. Reportedly Onkyo was planning to concentrate on Digital Life portable products and OEM products and services, and as such it made sense to combine its premium brands with the Sound United portfolio.

Sonos Offers Speakers-as-a-Service

Sonos FlexA number of customers in the Netherlands can rent Sonos speakers through Flex, a service providing a number of speakers from the company for a monthly fee, with the option to cancel the subscription at any time.

Currently available to just 500 Dutch homes, the Flex subscription model comes in three tiers. At €15 per month customers get two Sonos One smart speakers for use either together or in separate rooms. The addition of €10 (making it €25 per month) begets a Sonos Beam soundbar and two Sonos One speakers for TV audio. The top tier is at €50 per month, and provides a Playbar, Subwoofer and two Sonos One speakers for a home theatre setup.
